Students will get an introduction to the key concepts in the study of International Institutions.

We will focus on topics such as: why we have them, how they are designed, who calls the shots inside them, what influence they have and discuss recent challenges.

The course will focus on comparing different International Institutions in a variety of policy areas ranging from economic over human rights to security in order to better understand contemporary debates on International Institutions like Brexit, the role of the UN Security Council in recent conflicts or the WHO during global disease outbreaks like COVID-19.

The first class on 20.4 will not be held live. Rather, you can log into the moodle course and will find materials and short introductory videos to learn more on what the course is about. The course details and password are published below.

Due to the evolving situation, the course will not go ahead as planned with three long blocks on three fridays. I do not think that anyone is capable or willing to spend a whole day in front of zoom, skype, etc. Rather the work will be spread out more evenly throughout the semester and the blocks will be shorter to account for the work already done before. In order to account for differences in students ability to commit to specific times or differences in technological equipment, I will try to make the course more accessible by not offering much material live. Where live videochats are necessary for discussions, I will try to offer multiple slots so that people can fit the timing to their schedules.
