The German attack on the Soviet Union on 22 June 1941 marked the beginning of an ideological war of annihilation, which led to the deaths of around 27 million people on the Soviet side, including around 15 million civilians. Some 2.6 million Jews were killed close to their homes in the Soviet Union and annexed areas in the Baltic States and Poland. The Soviet Romani were likewise targeted by the SS Einsatzgruppen. More than 3 million Soviet prisoners of war died in German prison camps. Sick and disabled people were considered unwanted eaters and were left starving in clinics, killed in gas vans, or executed. Everyday life for people in the occupied territories was characterised by ethnic cleansing, hunger, and random violence as anybody could be suspected to support partisans. The aim of the tutorial is to give an overview of the specifics of Nazi occupation policies in the Soviet Union.
