Entrepreneurship is about creating and building something of value from practically nothing. It represents a paradigm shift in the way we think about, teach and conduct business activity. Any firm, if it is to survive and prosper, must have some measure of entrepreneurial drive. An entrepreneur is someone who creates or seizes an opportunity (”opportunity driven”) and relentlessly pursues it without regard to the resources currently controlled. By riding an innovation wave, they create wealth and jobs in the process throughout all facets of business.

Entrepreneurship Science is directed to research and support all sorts of entrepreneurial activities. This course is aimed at the intersection between science and practice, specifically addressing the topic of evidence based Tech-Entrepreneurship. Tech Entrepreneurs are specialists in bringing high potential technologies from the lab to the market.

Students work within teams on very tangible outcomes. There will be a lot of creative freedom to bring in their interests. At the same time the course demands a high degree of personal responsibility and self-organisation.

Important information and teaching materials for the course are provided on Moodle. Besides the registration in the PULS system (puls.uni-potsdam.de), the registration on Moodle (moodle.uni-potsdam.de) is mandatory. Registration on Moodle must be completed by the end of the second week of lectures.

For personal exchange, there will be physical consultation hours at the university at least every fortnight.

Students will work on a joint publication on the most recent evidence based findings within the field of tech-entrepreneurship by “translating” them for practitioners.

Together with Prof. Dr. Halecker and the IME-team they will start from scratch, identifying currently relevant research streams and topics, structuring those into plausible clusters, synthesizing the findings into chapters and finally co-creating an anthology for the target group of founders, entrepreneurs, investors and interested stakeholders.

Each team is given a central chapter to work on.The book will be published at the end of the semester, the students being the co-authors of the respective chapters.

Every student will need a high degree of the following entrepreneurial traits:

  • self-organisation,
  • motivation,
  • self-initiative
  • team-orientation

Thereby…

  • students reach in-depth knowledge of the different aspects of entrepreneurship
  • students cover what aspiring entrepreneurs need to know to start and grow their businesses
  • students learn about the entrepreneurial process from searching for an opportunity to shaping it into a commercially attractive product or service, launching the new venture, and building it into a viable business
