The pursuit of deep technologies around the world is both broad and deep. These technologies can have a big impact, take a long time to reach market-ready maturity, and require a substantial amount of capital. Deep technologies are novel and are significant advances over technologies currently in use. They require concerted R&D to develop practical business or consumer applications and bring them from the lab to the market. Many of these technologies address big societal and environmental challenges and will likely shape the way we solve some of the most pressing global problems. These technologies have the power to create their own markets or disrupt existing industries. On the downside, due to the complexity of deep tech ecosystems, it can be very hard for stakeholders to navigate within them and reveal their full potential. Technology management and this course is aiming at exactly this gap.
Students will work within teams on very tangible outcomes. There will be a lot of creative freedom to bring in their interests. At the same time the course demands a high degree of personal responsibility and self-organisation.
Important information and teaching materials for the course are provided on Moodle. Besides the registration in the PULS system (puls.uni-potsdam.de), the registration on Moodle (moodle.uni-potsdam.de) is mandatory. Registration on Moodle must be completed by the end of the second week of lectures.
For personal exchange, there will be physical consultation hours at the university at least every fortnight.
Mandatory literature will be announced throughout the course.
Due to the format and the therefore necessary supervision the course is limited to 30 participants.
Portfolio exam
The examination of the course will be done via a portolio exam consisting of the following deliverables:
The course Technology Management will focus on the field of ”Deep Tech”. Using Prof. Dr. Haleckers resources at the Deep Tech Institute in collaboration with the HPI the students will jointly work on a ”Deep Tech Germany Report 2021”. Students will identify current deep technologies, existing institutions, research streams and trends in order to point out potentials and pitfalls for companies, entrepreneurs and policy makers. Each team will choose a deep technology to do research on. The study will be published at the end of the semester, the students being the co-authors of the respective chapters.
Every student will need and develop a high degree of the following traits:
