This foundational course draws on the phonetic, morphological, lexical, semantic and syntactic description as trained in the introductory module and pursues linguistic description at the level of (written) text and (spoken) discourse. Text(s) and discourse(s) are viewed functionally as ways of communicating and interacting with addressees. Their meaning, or interpretation, is heavily dependent upon context. We will examine a number of structural and organizational principles common to both text and discourse production, have a closer look at the context(s) in which they are produced, and we will consider specific aspects of text and discourse description including communicative genres and conversational structure.
Literatur	The basic coursebook will be Brian Paltridge's 'Discourse Analysis' - as such, it is recommended to buy this textbook. Paltridge, B. (2012²). Discourse Analysis. London: Bloomsbury.
