The course deals with two classical Hindu narrative texts (the Mahabharata and the Ramayana) as foundational Dharma texts. The word “dharma” can be translated, depending on the context, as sacred world order, law, rituals, ethics, or religion. These important texts were the first that, in the form of narrative, articulated the place of the person within the socio-cosmic order, constructed a discourse of the meaningful past in the face of a perceived recent breakdown of the sacred order, created a sense of the Indian Subcontinent as a sacred space, constructed a collective identity for followers of Brahmin-led religion, articulated a political theology, debated fundamental ethical values, asked about suffering and its meaning and redefined paths to salvation through a new theology of divine presence and intervention.
