Utilizing sources from throughout the Jewish world, we will explore the use of congregational melodies in conjunction with the nusach studied in Cantors Abramowicz and Schleifers class, as well as the repertoire taught by Cantor Barak. The goal is to create a rendition of the liturgy that engages the congregation while being firmly rooted in the traditional text and musical material. As a final assignment, each student will be assigned a section of the Yom Kippur liturgy to prepare in their presentation the student will demonstrate the mastery and usage of the different musical materials, weaving together nusach, congregational melodies and possibly accompanied/choral repertoire into a cohesive and expressive whole.
Literatur	Source materials will include (but are not limited to): - Zamru Lo, the next generation (Volume II, High Holy Days), - Piyut.org.is (Hazmanah L’piyut), German sources: - Isaac Levy Anthology off Sephardic music, - A. Z. Adelsohn Thesaurus, Contemporary Israeli repertoire by various artists (such as the Razel brothers, Ovadiah Hamama, to name a few), Contemporary American sources (focusing on material in Hebrew that would be appropriate for use in Europe), and more….
