Seminar requirements: weekly reading assignments, one in-class presentation and submission of its manuscript (printed), active participation in class discussion.

This seminar examines various approaches to law and mitzvah in modern Jewish philosophy. The central premise is that theoretical psychoanalysis presents an interesting challenge which can contribute and enrich this discussion. The center of gravity of psychoanalysis is the psychological depth and it considers irrational and unconscious aspects of man and society. Questions about the origin of law, the internalization of law, the authority of law and the phenomenology of law in light of psychoanalysis are loaded with additional meaning. We will learn texts of Spinoza, Hermann Cohen, Franz Rosenzweig and Abraham Heschel, and attempt to examine those various approaches in light of Freudian psychoanalysis.
