The seminar will be held in blocks: First session on October 24th (time to be announced) 4 blocks on the following Saturdays 23rd November, 14th December, 11th January, 01th February, 11-18 hours.
It is in many ways justifiable to call the Augustan era (44 BC – 14 AD) the central era of the history of ancient Rome. It was this epoch that saw Romes transformation from a republic to an empire. Augustus, the heir of Julius Caesar, put an end to the civil wars that were haunting the tortured people for decades and (through sometimes questionable measures) founded the Pax Romana, the longest period of inner peace that the ancient world has ever known. To the modern historian this time nevertheless presents a very specific challenge, because despite its high importance our historical sources are scarce and often late. This is where archeology comes into play. In the course of this seminar we will therefore have a closer look at the most important archeological sources of this fascinating era and find out in which way and under which limitations the modern historian can make use of them to develop a better understanding of Augustan Rome.
