This course will approach the books of the Hebrew biblical canon as works of literature. At the centre of our attention will be the literary value of the respective biblical books and the narrative and aesthetical techniques they use to affect the reader in the intended way. The course will set the Hebrew Bible in context of the Ancient Middle Eastern literature, but also the Western literary canon with a particular emphasis on the Graeco-Roman Classics and medieval Christian literature. A major part of the course will be critical reading and discussion of the primary texts in English, German and/or Hebrew (depending on the demand). This course will be offered in English, with possibility to discuss particular problems both in English and German. Students will work with English and German set readings and offered to choose the preferred language when possible.
