Kommentar

The master programs "Geosciences" and "Remote Sensing, Geoinformation and Visualization" both include a mandatory module "Data Analysis and Statistics". You can choose one of two variants, variant A (Bookhagen) in the winter semester and variant B (Trauth) in the summer semester. The variants can also be taken for a number of elective modules, including those in other masters programs.

 

Variante B includes an introduction to a higher-level programming languages such as MATLAB, Python and Julia; overview of data types and methods; one-, two-, and multi-variable statistics; time series analysis; statistics for spatial and directional data; numerical procedures; image processing and analysis. The course is based on the instructor's textbooks available for free (Trauth, 2021b, Trauth, 2022).

 

We will meet on Mondays 12:15-15:45 in a Zoom Session for lectures, demonstrations, and discussion. You will get a link to the MOODLE Page and the ZOOM Link on 13 April 2023 via Email. The MOODLE site contains prerecorded lectures and demonstrations, the homework assignments, and extensive additional material such as links to my blog and other materials.

 

There will be 10 homework assignments, all of which can be solved at home and 8 of which must be solved. We will also arrange an optional practical course for data acquisition and analysis with different measurement devices (Lego Mindstorms, spectral cameras, smartphones, LiDARs, 3D scanners and cameras) during the lecture-free period (Trauth, 2021a). Any of the 10 homework assignments can be substituted from these practicum experiments – maximum flexibility!

 

The final examination is an individual project in data acquisition and analysis, with a recorded presentation and commented computer code as a report.
