Contemporary popular music in 21st century Britain, from Post-Britpop to female-fronted Punk, from Grime and Dubstep to UK Trap, popular music has always responded to processes of social transformation, economic pressure, and cultural politics.
In this seminar, we will explore these responses in musical tracks, music videos, and various media outlets. Students will engage with theoretical texts on race, nation, class, and gender, and draw from popular music studies, to develop critical perspectives on contemporary popular culture and society. Students will also become acquainted with analytical tools to interpret the sonic, lyrical, visual, and cultural aspects of a range of musical works and performances.
Our first session is on 24 April and will take place on zoom. Information on accessing the zoom session will be communicated to all registered and admitted course participants.
