In the 20th century, Poland changed its social structure from a multi-ethnic and multi-religious state into a predominantly Catholic country with an overwhelming majority of ethnic Poles. The process of recognition and re-negotiation of new social and economic relations was ignited during the Second World War and took place under the auspices of communist regime, within the Eastern Bloc. For many Poles, these and other traits of country´s history certify its uniqueness. However, similar developments can be observed in other European countries and they certify rather a ‘normal’ character of Polish history. The seminar looks at the social, economic and political developments of Poland in the 20th century “beyond martyrdom”, following the narrative of Brian Porter-Szücs´s excellent monograph.
