The course explores the main events and developments in the political and social history of Israel since the establishment of the state in 1948 until the present day. It discusses crucial political figures, such as David Ben Gurion, Yitzhak Rabin, Ariel Sharon and Benyamin Netanyahu, as well as socio-cultural processes resulting among others from the Jewish character of the state, the multicultural society and the ever-present remembrance of the Shoah. The focus is laid on internal affairs and domestic politics. International relations and Arab-Israeli conflict are discussed only to the extent necessary to understand the local situation.
