Usage-based approaches to second language acquisition - Einzelansicht

The field of Second Language Acquisition (SLA) has undergone a bifurcation in the past decades. This movement, widely known as the ‘Social Turn’, fostered the appearance of alternative interactional usage-based approaches that question some of the main methods and concepts of mainstream SLA research. This course serves as an introduction to research on second language acquisition from a usage-based perspective.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

By the end of this course students should:

- articulate the theoretical background of usage-based SLA research

- explain second language learning from a usage-based perspective

- explain key terms pertaining to specific usage-based approaches

- evaluate scientific research findings and practical materials in light of these approaches

Class time will consist of lectures, discussions of readings, and analyses of second language learning materials (e.g., smartphone applications and textbooks).
