Creative Approaches to Teaching Grammar - Einzelansicht

He, she, it - das "s" muss mit... - probably sounds familiar to most of us. Grammar seems to be an essential part of the language classroom. At the same time, the "how to" of grammar instruction has always been a controversial topic in EFL research and teacher education.

In this course we will discuss some of the key questions surrounding this topic. What exactly is grammar? How much grammar teaching is necessary at primary school? What are effective approaches when teaching grammar to young learners? And what is the role of grammar in the framework of Task-Based Language Learning? After revising some foundations of second language acquisition, we will take a look at grammar in curricular guidelines, evaluate tasks and activities in current EFL text books and get to know a variety of interactive and learner-centred methods of grammar teaching (e.g. using games, songs, stories, project-based learning and new media). By analysing practical examples from the primary EFL classroom, we will discuss how to integrate meaningful "focus on form" into modern task-based learning and address questions related to lesson planning/material design, differentiation, dealing with language errors and ways of giving learners feedback. Participants will design lesson plans and material to be used in the classroom.
