In this course we will study sources which reflect the struggle which occupies a central place in the Talmud and Midrash against the penetration of dualistic elements (from Gnosis and Christian influences) into the Jewish faith. Thus, for an example, we will look at the discourse that developed in the Talmud and after it around the text of the scapegoat (for Azazel) which is mentioned in the Book of Leviticus regard to the special ceremony dedicated to it at Yom Kippur (day of atonement). This biblical text is particularly challenging for the rabbis as it is seemingly explicitly presenting a ritual based on a dualistic belief in two conflicting cosmic forces: God versus Satan.
