Kommentar	<p dir="ltr"><strong>Course content.</strong> </p><p dir="ltr">Review of statistical mechanics and a general perspective on critical phenomena, Ising model and approaches to its solution, random walks and diffusion, anomalous diffusion, Hurst exponent and examples, e.g., river flow, finance, self-organized criticality and the Bak-Tang-Wiesenfeld sandpile model, applications to geoscience, e.g., avalanches, landslides, tropical rainfall, forest fire model, earthquake dynamics and simple models, generalized extreme value distribution and its applications, time permitting: additional topics. </p>

Lerninhalte	<p dir="ltr"><strong>Intended learning outcomes.</strong></p><p dir="ltr">Students acquire a basic understanding of statistical physics concepts and become familiar with the concept of emergence and self-organization. Students laern how to apply simple interacting spatiotemporal models to various situations in the geosciences and gain conceptual understanding of a range of emergent phenomena, that is, system-wide organization from local interactions. Students learn how to approach several models using analytical tools and simple computer simulations and to present their results. </p><p> </p>
Zielgruppe	Masters level (or advanced undergraduate) course geared towards physics, applied math and geosciences, including ClEWS. The course is largely self-contained.
