A close reading of selected texts from the Book of Psalms in Hebrew. The main goal of the course will be to develop an ability to prepare a text from psalms in Hebrew and to read it as poetry and as liturgy. Issues addressed will include the theologies of the Book of Psalms, the literary forms of the psalms, the use of psalms in ancient Israelite ritual, and their relation to other ancient Near Eastern liturgical traditions. The course will focus on training students to read biblical Hebrew poetry with attention to style and linguistic nuance.
* Due to Jewish high holidays, the course will start on the 30.10.2024. To receive the zoom link for this online-course, please register prior to the starting date by sending an email to Dr. Daniel Vorpahl (non-binary, preferably without pronoun): vorpahl@uni-potsdam.de
