Learning about how pupils/students acquire/learn English is essential for (future) English instructors. We will start this course by exploring the origins of second language acquisition theory and research and will continue by looking at subsequent developments in the area. Cognitive, linguistic, and sociocultural approaches to SLA will be explored. We will also look at how SLA research translates into teaching strategies, and theory will be followed by practical classroom activities. After this introductory part, students are required to work on a presentation comprised of: 1) a short demonstration lesson, and 2) a discussion of how a specific SLA theory underlies the chosen activity(ies) in the demonstration lesson.
