This course will embark on an interdisciplinary analysis of the concepts of National Security in a global context, (political) religion, extremism, terrorism, (political) Islam/Islamism. It will give an overview of the politics of religion and the policy regarding religion in Germany (“Religionspolitik”) as well as in other countries, such as France, Great Britain, Turkey, Iran and Saudi Arabia. Another focus of this course is a discussion of the left-right paradigm from the perspective of Religionspolitik (fascism, racism/Anti-Semitism). It will conclude with an analysis of individual cases: Salafism/Wahabism, Daesh/Al Kaida, Taliban, Hezbollah, Hamas, as well as phenomena of right and left-wing extremism in Germany and Europe.
