The course provides an introduction into International Political Economy (IPE). IPE is a sub-discipline of international relations that focuses on the political elements of global economic problems. The overarching question of the course is: Why is the global economy governed the way it is? Who challenges the current global economic order and what are these challenges based on? The course will provide a theoretical overview of core concepts of IPE and then apply these concepts on key policy issues. Students are able to choose three policy areas, we will focus on. These could be, for example, trade, aid, government debt, financial crises, monetary integration or foreign investment. Students will learn how to formulate research questions, critically analyse literature, apply key theories and evaluate them based on empirical evidence in their term paper.
The course will be held in english. Students should be able to hold a conversation and read academic texts in english. No prior knowledge of economics is needed to take the course, though a basic understanding of economic concepts will help.
Active participation in class, timely submission of written assignements, submission of a short research design outlining the term paper, term paper
