Lerninhalte

This course combines predicting public decision-making on sustainability (in this semester we use the CO2 price as example) with the consequences for the business strategy of companies (in this semester our partner is Reuther STC, a German Mittelstand company in the area of steel production).

In part 1 of the course, the students will be introduced to the simulation software Predictioneer’s Game, followed by undertaking actual predictions of negotiations on a sustainability issue (the price of carbon). The students will work together in interdisciplinary teams consisting out of master students from public policy and administration, business administration, economics and software systems engineering. The overall class will have not more than 20 students. The deliverables in this first part are: one individual actor paper where each student takes the perspective of a single actor (e.g. political actor from Germany, business or international actor) discussing the ”correct” price of carbon. Building on this perspective, a positioning scale is developed which will then be used for the overall negotiation (the results will be documented in a group paper).

In part 2, we use the results of the first part and apply them to an individual company in order to derive practical recommendations for their future business strategy. Here we start with a company’s perspective on sustainability (e.g., why should companies be sustainable, how can sustainability be reflected in business strategy?). Followed by a general introduction to strategic management tools such as internal and external strategic analyses (SWOT analysis, gap analysis) and a stakeholder analysis, the students will take the perspective of the partner firm Reuther STC and conduct the necessary analyses to understand how the firm is currently positioned. Using the predictions, they build different strategic scenarios for the firm and derive recommendations for the firm how to best implement these scenarios. In the final presentation on June 23rd, these recommendations will be presented to the partner firm.

The class equals 4SWS (6 ECTS) and has one individual and two group assignments. The class is taught by Prof. Katharina Hölzle (HPI) and Prof. Detlef Sprinz (PIK). In the current version, we are prepared to teach the class completely online and digitally.
