Israels relations with Central Eastern European (CEE) countries are multidimensional and complex. In fact, countries like Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia, Romania and the Baltic States, apart from the common Jewish-Central-Eastern European history and its heritage, do share similar views on security issues, which they define through the lens of “Realpolitik” and pro-Atlantic perspective. Israeli and CEE’sleaders are also interested in developing their own directions of foreign policy and economic cooperation – a move they see as a way to strengthen their international subjectivity and provide counterbalance to the adaptive pressure from Brussels. This seminar aims at presenting the origins, substance and limitations of further development of the specific Israel-CEE States relations. The seminar will seek for answers on the question what makes these relations different compared with the relations Israel maintains with other EU-countries (mostlyWestern European) and also on the question what these differences mean for the European Union and its Middle Eastern Policy. The seminar also qualifies for students of political science and Jewish Studies. It is led by Prof. Dr. Joanna Dyduch, Visiting Professor at the Moses Mendelssohn Center.
