Between Here and There. Eastern Europeans and Their Diasporas - Einzelansicht

This course will be offered in ENGLISH.

The course will focus on historical, social and cultural development of diverse Eastern European diasporas outside of Eastern Europe. The students will analyze the key waves of Eastern European migration to North America, Latin America and Israel in XIX and XX century and their impact on the host societies, as well as on the transnational exchange with the communities which remained in the country of origin. The course will in equal part focus on Jewish and non-Jewish migrants thus underlining their shared experience as Eastern Europeans. The course will primarily focus on the experience of Russian, Polish, Ukrainian and Jewish ethnic communities The topics would include among others: immigrant writing, anti-migrant rhetoric and discrimination, creation of ethnic neighborhoods, emergence of hyphenated identities and ethnic cultural production.
