Wars in the Greater Middle East seem an almost natural state of affairs. While especially the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has received much attention, the aspects of several other wars that ravaged the region since 1945 are seldom studied in context of the Cold War and development in military affairs. Yet, the Iraq-Iran War (1980-1988) and the Russian war in Afghanistan (1979-1989) have foreshadowed many developments and peculiarities of armed conflicts in the 21st century. This course aims to contextualise the Arab-Israeli Wars during the Cold War to neighbouring ones in the Greater Middle East. The focus will be the military operations – the political, diplomatic and social implications will be mentioned, but cannot be covered in detail. This course is held in English. ********************************* COVID-19 UPDATE: The course will initially be held online. Hence, do not worry too much about the first session or being able to secure a spot. This should not be a problem and we will work through this crisis together.
