Content: The purpose of this course is to bring new students in the CogSys program up to speed with the basic math needed in the program. We’ll cover trigonometry, set theory, Boolean algebra, calculus, linear algebra, and probability theory. The textbook used in this course is: Jordan & Smith, Mathematical Techniques (Oxford University Press). The library has copies but I recommend buying it because you’re going to spend a significant amount of time with this book and it will also be useful as a reference in future courses.
Format: Students will work on weekly exercises and we will discuss solutions and open questions in class. The course will be taught online and likely in a synchronous format but we can negotiate the details in the first week. Note that this course will be rather time-consuming. Keep that in mind when planning the term.
