Transnational actors wield considerable influence on politics across borders. This seminar takes stock of the many roles of transnational actors and their importance for international relations (IR). After clarifying the discipline’s interest in transnational actors, we turn to theoretical accounts of agency, representation and interaction. With a focus on varying access, participation, influence and power of transnational actors, we explore and present research on different transnational actors in IR. The seminar concludes with a conference (online) on the question whether we observe a shift from international to transnational relations.
The seminar is organized in seven working packages (WP). Each WP comes with (1) an introduction to the topic, (2) an activity to reflect on the required readings, (3) video presentations (WP 5-7), (4) a discussion forum, (5) additional resources.
