Although ancient in origin, Modern Hebrew remains a living language with works continually published across the spectrum of literary, scientific and cultural fields. While many texts have been translated into other languages, a great number can still only be read in their original Hebrew form. Moreover, an author’s subtleties and nuances can sometimes be lost in translation, so this course aims to develop reading skills in Modern Hebrew to enable students to access texts as they were first published.

The reading list for this advanced course includes works of fiction and selected articles from Israeli newspapers. The texts will be chosen on the basis of the language skills and interests of the participants. The fiction section includes works by Etgar Keret, David Grossman, Adi Keissar and Sayed Kashua among others, while press articles will come from HaaretzMakor Rishon and Kan. In studying these texts, we will emphasize grammatical issues such as morphology, syntax, and semantics.

An oral exam, based on a previously unseen text, will take place at the end of the course.
