Check that all course times for the group for which you want to apply fit into your schedule.

Information on online/in-person classes can be found in the course descriptions for each teacher or group below. Students will receive access to information on the evening before the course begins via e-mail from their teacher if they have been admitted to a group that meets online first.

Attendance at the first meeting of the course is mandatory to preserve the place in the class.

Voraussetzung für alle Gruppen: Between 70 and 100 points on the placement test or completion of UNIcert II/2, English for Academic Purposes

Gruppe 1: Rebecca van Es

Classes will take place once a week online via Zoom and once a week in-person at Griebnitzsee where students are expected to follow the current Covid-19 regulations.

All material for this course will be available on Moodle and the teacher will contact participants before the first class to give them access to it.

The course will introduce participants to aspects of legal systems and laws in English-speaking countries (South Africa, the UK and the US) and help them to explain aspects of their own legal system. Classes will include discussion of legal issues in various countries, engaging with legal content taken from cases, legislation, podcasts, articles and videos, and practising communication with clients, colleagues and others in a legal context.

Gruppe 2, Gruppe 3: Peter Harvey

Monday classes (Gruppe 2) will take place in-person at Griebnitzsee where students are expected to follow the current Covid-19 regulations. Friday classes (Gruppe 3) will take place online, with other communications sent via email.

All material for this course is sent out as email attachments. Students are asked to give the lecturer their preferred email address.

This course will look at the development of the common law across the English-speaking world and how it has grown up differently from German or French law. We shall consider particularly the six ‘core subjects:’ Crime, Tort, Contract, Equity, Constitutional Law and Land. We shall however also spend a good deal of time on the task of explaining German law in English, concentrating on those areas of law with which students are familiar in their German law courses.

Gruppe 4, Gruppe 5, Gruppe 6: Tom Heaven

Classes will take place once a week online via Zoom and once a week in-person at Griebnitzsee where students are expected to follow the current Covid-19 regulations.

Material for this course will be available on Moodle and the teacher will contact participants to give them access to it. Extracts from cases, legislation, journals and text books as well as newspaper articles, podcasts and videos are among the material that will be used in class.

Students in this course will improve their ability to communicate clearly in different legal contexts, practise explaining law-related ideas in an online international exchange with other law students, and receive support in presenting their own ideas and knowledge in person and online. By the end of the course, students will be in a better position to use English to explain the German legal system and understand and explain English language legal systems.

Gruppe 7, Gruppe 8: Carolyn Mills

This compact course will meet THREE times per week and ends on January 15 with a written course test. The class will take place online via Zoom on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and in Griebnitzsee on Wednesdays, where students are expected to follow the current Covid-19 regulations. Students should expect to complete up to one hour of homework before each lesson.

Material for the course will be provided by the teacher on Moodle and by e-mail. Participants will be contacted by the teacher before the first class on October 26 concerning access to the material.

This course offers an introduction to the common law system of the United States. We will discuss principles of civil and criminal law, including the death penalty, the jury and civil rights such as freedom of speech. We will also address current political issues in the USA as they arise. By reading and discussing original texts, students will develop their analytical skills and acquire a command of American legal terminology. The class, which is discussion-based, requires active participation, regular preparation and ends with a written course test.
