This course will offer an introduction to the history, theory, and practice of documentary filmmaking. The first part of the course will be dedicated to the global history of documentary film. It will show how different documentary traditions have developed around the world and discuss the colonial dimensions of the history of nonfiction film. The second part, more theoretical in content, will focus on discussions around the difference between document and documentary, on the analysis of documentary films as historical sources, on the relationship between oral history and documentary studies, and on the history documentary as a film genre. Throughout the semester, participants will be also introduced to the practice of documentary filmmaking through a series of visual exercises, including a short oral history project (5-15 min). Such exercises can be done with any kind of camera. No previous knowledge of cinematography is required to join the course. To validate the course, students must 1. write a 1,000-word film analysis 2. prepare four visual exercises, including a short documentary film and 3. submit a final paper by March 31 (length to be determined by the relevant Studienordnungen).
