UNIcert® IV/2
English for Business Studies, Economics and
Social Sciences

(certificate course)

This is the second part of the UNIcert® IV English for Business Studies, Economics and Social Sciences, and leads to a UNIcert® IV proficiency certificate in English (C2 level).

Students wishing to enroll in this course must have successfully completed the UNIcert® IV/1 English for Business Studies, Economics and Social Sciences course at the University of Potsdam in order to enroll.

Any student who has successfully completed a UNIcert® IV/1 in an area other than Business Studies, Economics, and Social Sciences at the University of Potsdam is invited to register for this course, but is advised to speak to the course instructor prior to enrollment.

The course builds on the skills and protocols developed in the UNIcert® IV/1 English for Business Studies, Economics, and Social Sciences  course, and aims to strengthen student language skills to an extremely competent academic and professional level.

Working independently and on a strict deadline, each student analyzes a case study based on their area of interest and presents their analysis in class.  Each student will then submit a written case study analysis at the end fo the semester in preparation for the certificate exam at the end of the semester.  finalizes their analysis in a final presentation, giving evidence based on independent research and discovery as to why their proposed solution is the best of the possible alternatives.

Final Exams: Successful completion of the four examinations (reading comprehension, written expression, listening comprehension and oral expression) at the end of this course leads to a UNIcert® IV English for Business Studies, Economics, and Social Sciences certificate (CEFR C2 level).

For the final oral exam, the student presents an analysis of a shorter case study under a strict timeframe and supervised testing conditions using the skills and procedures practiced in the UNIcert® IV/1 and UNIcert® IV/2 courses.  The final written exam tests the student’s reading comprehension skills, and written expression incorporating critical thinking, analytical and rhetoric skills in examining a business case, and is similar in scope to the written exam for UNIcert® IV/1 course of this series.  There is also a timed listening comprehension test.

The four test scores (reading comprehension, written expression, listening comprehension and oral expression) are averaged to determine the final grade for this course and the level of proficiency to be indicated on the UNIcert® IV certificate.

Testing Fee: There is a testing fee of 20 euros to take the UNIcert® IV Certificate exams following the completion of the UNIcert® IV/2 course

This course is supported by course-specific E-Learning resources as well as additional practice materials on "Moodle 2.UP".
