Someone who can answer the question "what does it mean?" about a text would be said to exhibit understanding of natural language. Is that all that natural language understanding means? In this class, we will take a broad look at the phenomenon, with the question in mind of whether the perspective that the field of natural language processing (NLP) takes on natural language understanding does indeed capture it or not. We will read seminal papers not only from NLP, but also from cognitive psychology, linguistic pragmatics, and the philosophy of language. The discussions about the papers will be lead by a different student each week, and participation from all is expected.
