Machine learning, natural language processing, and automated data analysis are increasingly finding their way into the social science discourse. They are praised as "computational methods" that are supposed to raise our ability to analyze social phenomena to a new level. But what are the methodological challenges behind these concepts? What is their added value for empirical social research? And what skills and tools are needed to really make sense of them? The aim of this course is to equip students with the necessary content and methodological knowledge to develop answers to the above-mentioned questions. The objective is thus not so much to teach them how to apply such methods, but to create a basic understanding of "Computational Social Sciences". This is to train the ability to critically question the increasing buzz wording tendencies with these terms by others.

Bemerkung

The course serves as an in-depth methods seminar for master students of different fields of study in the social sciences. The idea for the seminar came forth in the context of a research project, in which difficulties arose regarding the stringent application of Web-Crawling techniques in digital transformation research.

Leistungsnachweis

The practical goal of the course is to create a systematic literature review that shows the current state of research on a selected method which will be discussed during the course to reflect critically on it with respect to opportunities and limitations for its application in administrative science.

Lerninhalte

Through the intensive study of various applications of selected methods (i.e., web-crawling, computer-linguistical methods & analysis of digital behavioral data) which will also be facilitated by external data scientists via guest lectures, students will develop the competence to recognize opportunities and limitations of "computational research" in a social science context. Furthermore, we will regularly train the development of different research designs in the seminar, which combine classical quantitative and/or qualitative methods with the new "computational methods". These research designs will be located in the realm of (digital) transformation research in public administration. At the end of the course, students will present their own research design in small groups and discuss those of other groups.

With the help of the seminar, students should get the opportunity to get a look behind the buzzwords and develop their ability to create feasible research designs. The students are encouraged to conduct their own empirical work, especially for their master thesis.
