Re-Writing Shakespeare: animating anti-racism - Einzelansicht

This two week intensive block seminar will provide an opportunity to study two of William Shakespeare's most problematic plays in terms of anti-Black racism and colonialism, namely, The Tempest and Othello, in the first weekend (Friday 4-6pm, Saturday and Sunday 10am-6pm, dates to be confirmed). We will watch the plays and read anti-colonial / anti-racist responses which include A Tempest by Aimé Césaire and Nothello by the tutor, Mojisola Adebayo. In the second weekend, students will have an exciting opportunity to write their own response The Tempest and Othello. Alternatively, students have the option to re-write other plays by Shakespeare that have been considered to be problematic in terms of anti-Semetism and sexism including The Merchant of Venice and The Taming of the Shrew. Students should be prepared not only to read and study intensively in the first weekend but commit to an intensive creative writing weekend and support each other through feedback.
