In this seminar, we will engage with issues of race and racism in foreign language education from a theoretical and practical perspective. While the theoretical part explores readings and discussions on issues of racism, colonialism, Empire, and language ideologies in English language teaching, the practical part includes an application of this knowledge in the context of a school project, where the students of the present seminar will (co-)teach English language learners (10th graders) on the topic of racism in American culture and history. In the seminar, we will jointly prepare, self-design, discuss, and evaluate teaching lessons for the planned teaching project. The aim of this seminar is to gain theoretical and practical knowledge on the topic at hand and to develop a wide range of anti-racist and anti-colonial teaching materials that you can (re-)use in your future teaching.
The school project will take place in a secondary school (Gymnasium) located in Berlin on the following date: 20th of January 2023 (Friday!) between 8:00am – 1:25 pm. Please note: The school project and two other dates (24.10.2022 & 7.11.2022) during which an external speaker will give two lectures on anti-racist English language teaching during our seminar hours (4:15 - 5:45pm) are obligatory for successful participation!
Achtung: Das Seminar richtet sich, anders als auf Puls verzeichnet, nur an Studierende der Sekundarstufe Englisch.
