The semester-long course is designed as the first part of the yearly survey-course on the musical liturgy and music of the life-cycle events and minor holy-days. Its purpose is to familiarize the students with the customs and prayers of the ceremonies of the major life events from birth to death.
The prayer-chants and melodies will be discussed with reference to the ideas behind the practices and the customs (Minhagim) that accompany it. Due consideration will be given to Orthodox as well as Conservative, Liberal and Reform customs and prayers. The musical Nusach will follow both Eastern European and German traditions as needed. The course is divided into ten Lessons, about half of which will be given by Cantor Eliyahu Schleifer and half by Cantor Isidoro Abramowicz. (Note: Some of the lessons will take more than one session, while others will be shorter.)
Literature will be made known during the course.
At the end of the course there will be a performance assessment.
