In this class we will analyze how literature and culture respond to the environmental injustices of the so-called ”Wasteocene” (Armiero), focusing on pollution, and how they imagine and call for forms of justice for humans and more-than-human beings. To do so, we will engage with the literary and cultural representation of different forms of pollution—ranging from radioactive pollution to oil extraction and plastics, and moving between cities, deserts and oceans.
Students should be ready to work through complex theoretical questions and engage extensively with a wide range of materials during this block seminar. They will be given the opportunity to deepen their analytical reading and writing skills, and to discuss their findings among their peers in an intensive two-week workshop-like setting.
Please note: our first organizational session is on May 5, 10am-12pm. It is important that you attend this session!
