This BA course will focus on problems of cultural diversity and cultural contact; we will investigate into (critical) representations of British (cultural) identity in a number of exemplary texts and discuss their ambiguities between innovative, subversive potentials and mainstream affirmative undercurrents. This will include discussion of concepts of cultural mobilty and cultural contact as well as a investigation into articulations and representations of cultural Otherness inside a national culture.Black British literature by Caribbean, Asian, African writers (and of other formerly British colonial origin) of first, second and third generation diasporic background will be evry much in the centre of our discussions, always from perspectives that problematise aspects of gender and ethnic identity next to analyses of aesthetic qualities.
