Shakespeare has remained a popular choice for adaptation in India for a very long time. On the silver screen, Shakespeare's plays have adapted and translated for an Indian audience with interesting results. These adaptations have dealt with questions of religion, caste, nationhood, etc.
In this seminar, we will compare Omkara (2006; adapted from Othello) and Haider (2014; adapted from Hamlet) to their original contexts and ask: what does a Bollywood film do to a Shakespearean tragedy and vice-versa? And what does such a translation do for us in the 21st century where Bollywood is seen as a larger representation of India?
Questions can be sent at priyam.goswami.choudhury@uni-potsdam.de
For the module, both Omkara and Haider will be screened and the texts to be discussed will also be provided via the Moodle platform. Students may already familiarize themselves with Shakespeare's plays before the start of the semester.
Credits can be acquired by writing a response paper (1000-1500 words) for 3 ECTS or by writing a research paper (2000-2500 words) for 6 ECTS at the end of the semester.
