Texts come in various written and spoken forms and may be conveyed through different channels. Therefore, understanding texts and, even more so, producing own texts requires a complex set of skills. In this course we are going to explore different types of literary and non-literary texts – such as stories, picture books, songs, poems, (short) films, etc. – and will discuss their potential in the context of language teaching and learning in the primary EFL classroom. We will start with definitions and conceptualizations of different text types and will explore the necessity of pre-, while-, and post-reading/viewing activities with the help of many practical examples. Participants will design and evaluate short teaching sequences (micro-teaching units) and materials to be used in the classroom.
