Kurzkommentar

The course offers an in-depth discussion of the idea, the structure and the recent radical transformations of the ”public sphere”, generally considered to be a cornerstone of liberal society. We will first explore the modern emergence of the critical public sphere from the public forum of literary discourse and critique. In a second step we will turn to two waves of ”structural transformations of the public sphere” (Habermas): first, its transformation through mass media and consumer culture, and secondly, the recent transformation of the public sphere through social media. Both transformations have been welcomed as having the potential of giving rise to a democratization of public life, but at the same time seem to endanger the emancipatory ideals of enlightenment and critique at the very heart of the public sphere. We will highlight the ambivalent character of the recent changes, discuss the fragmentation, capitalization, and surveillance of public life as well as strategies of resistance. Among the authors and artists we will discuss are Kant, Hegel, Arendt, Benjamin, Adorno, Habermas, Luhmann, Lessig, Paglen, Poitras, Dean, Steyerl.
