This reading-intensive course will look at Shakespeare’s plays and sonnets with a Queer Studies perspective and discuss the queer potential of his works. We will read a selection of sonnets, as well as five plays: Twelfth Night, As You Like It, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Macbeth, and depending on a class vote, either Cymbeline or Romeo and Juliet. We will draw on further secondary material to guide our readings, which will be made available via Moodle. Copies of Shakespeare's plays will have to be obtained by the student. The aim of this course is to (re-)familiarise students with these canonic texts and enable them to work with queer theories.
To receive credit points for this course, students will be asked to submit an essay.
