Summary
The course will provide a thorough overview of ELF as a phenomenon and field of inquiry, emphasizing its origins, development, and practical implications. ELF will be presented against the backdrop of areas that have contributed to its expansion and consolidation, such as critical language pedagogy, intercultural education, and decolonial studies. The social, political, and ideological debates around ELF in contemporary multilingual/multicultural spaces will also be addressed. Objectives· Explore the rise of English as a global language, the reasons for its spread across the planet, and the different perspectives under which the phenomenon is understood and studied in several parts of the world; · Introduce the concept of English as a lingua franca (ELF), placing emphasis on its origins and the developments that have led to a solid and consolidated field of research;
Course Structure
The course is to take place in six sessions, where participants will be exposed to content through lectures and discuss the readings assigned for each session. Students must read the texts assigned for each session. Active participation and engagement are expected.
