Political theatre often reflects discourses prevalent in society, and British theatre is no exception in this respect. In this course, we will identify important moments in British theatre history and society and look at a number of outstanding plays. Among the plays we will discuss are John Osborne’s Look Back in Anger (1956), Edward Bond’s Saved (1965), Caryl Churchill’s Top Girls (1982), Winsome Pinnock’s Leave Taking (1987) and Lucy Kirkwood’s The Welkin (2020).
