In this course, we will examine US American 19th century poetry. Some of the poems we will read will be familiar to participants from popular culture - movies, series, songs - others because they are often referenced in academic contexts. Engaging with poetry is not only a part of cultural literacy. Especially now, that we communicate in curt statements, each word bears more weight, and each combination is called upon to fix meanings more precisely. As in poetry, the smallest signs can have profound effects.
We will also use this opportunity to learn something about US history. In order to at least weaken canonizations, our readings will be grouped in topics - such as nature/wilderness, expansion, nation, death, slavery. Suggestions are also welcome.
Poems and secondary literature will be provided on moodle.
