In this seminar, students will be introduced to Asian Englishes from the perspective of the World Englishes framework, which is concerned with the study of the acculturation and nativization processes of the English language worldwide. We will take a look at various varieties of English in the Asian cultural context, their functions in, e.g., pop culture and education, and discuss linguistic phenomena such as code-switching and identity building processes. This theoretical input will serve as basis for the students’ own research project, which constitutes the focus of the second practical part of the seminar. Participants will be required to work in groups on a topic of their choice (in line with the thematic focus of the seminar) under the guidance of the lecturer and present their findings on the last day of class. The details of the group work will be discussed in more detail, once the final number of participants is determined.
For research purposes, please bring your electronic devices (pads, notebooks) to class.
