In this seminar, students will be introduced to corpus-based approaches in linguistic research. This includes the knowledge and handling of already existing linguistic corpora, but also questions regarding the collection, choice, and type of own linguistic material for empirical research. Furthermore, we will look at what specific software tools are available in the analysis of this type of dataset. Specifically, the participants will be made familiar with the tools AntConc and QDA Miner Lite (both freeware). The first part of the seminar will deal with the theoretical basis to foster basic (and advanced) skills for conducting empirical research. By the example of African American Vernacular English, students will have the opportunity to apply the acquired skillset including formulating a research project, conduct the research in class with the guidance of the lecturer, and present the findings on the last day of the seminar. Participants will be required to work in groups; the details of the presentation will be discussed, once the final number of participants is determined. We will end the seminar with an evaluation of the presentations (each group will additionally receive detailed feedback from the lecturer) and the seminar altogether (reflecting on your progress made and experience during our four days together).
For research purposes, please bring your electronic devices (pads, notebooks) to class.
