After establishing the necessary terminological and theoretical framework, we will survey the role of English – broadly understood – in the linguistic situations of the anglophone – and also francophone – countries in West Africa. The common linguistic features of West African English as a regional variety as well as the specific ones of the national varieties will be considered. Furthermore, West African English will serve as foil for the explication of how cultural conceptualizations are realized in English (and other languages).
