In this seminar we will read and study four novels (and one or the other short story) about children who are mysteriously linked to history in different parts of the world. A better understanding of their fate, and of the narrative strategies involved in telling their stories requires us to do some reading into theories of magical / decolonial realism.
Please note that this is a reading-intense course; three of the four novels are long and dense: I strongly advise that you start reading them during term break.
Witi Ihimaera, The Whale Rider Salman Rushdie, Midnight's ChildrenToni Morrison, Beloved
Pauline Melville, The Ventriloquist's Tale Additional material will be made available online via Moodle. The Whale Rider must be read before the beginning of term.
